How To Become A Required Freelance Writer

Becoming a freelance writer is hard and getting steady work is even harder but there are a few ways that you can set yourself above the rest.  Since this can be done from home the pay is usually less then if you would work at a normal 9-5 job.  But you don’t have worry about a car, gas, or even a babysitter if you can work with your kids at home with you.  Like most freelance writers, you will probably start out small and then get better paying jobs as you get more experience.  Every job that you take, you need to always meet deadlines, write high quality work, and don’t be rude to your clients.  This will make you more likely to get jobs because then you will have a good background as a writer.

How To Become A Freelance Writer

  • You can start by getting a bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, creative writing, or communications.  This is not a requirement but it does give you a boost in the job market of freelance writers.  While you are in school your can write for your school’s newspaper or magazine, consider taking some business classes to help you market yourself, take at least one computer class so you know the basics and even more about computers, and do an internship that you can put on your resume. You can also start freelance writing in school try using a bid site to get a couple side jobs to do to build your resume as well.

  • Start building your portfolio as soon as you start writing.  It will change as your skill level improves but you always want to have samples of your best work to show clients or potential employers.  You should also write a variety of different kinds of writing so you have a sample for every job that you might apply to.

  • Don’t be afraid to look for freelance assignments or jobs.  Doing a search of just freelance writing jobs will give you thousands of results that you can start with.  And don’t become discouraged if you don’t find a job right away.  Like any new career it takes time to find the right job and to find one that is steady.

  • You also want to have a professional looking site that promotes your talent.  Just getting a free domain through WordPress, Wix, or Weebly can show potential employers all about you.  You site can also help you network with other writers and clients.
